SEEDBANK

Part of the fun of growing carnivorous plants comes from propagating your own little carnivores from seeds. There is much enjoyment and satisfaction to be had in germinating and growing plants from seeds - especially growing them long-term and into maturity - hopefully to flowering stage and producing your own sets of seeds.

The NZCPS provides a member-only seedbank for the purpose of increasing the understanding of this lifecycle process and increasing the enjoyment of CP's. Many carnivorous plants reproduce readily by seeds, whilst some others can be challenging even for the 'expert' growers out there! If required, to help with germinating and growing your plants, the NZCPS will include a germination guide for all seeds sent out if requested.

The majority of seedbank stock comes from seed donations from NZCPS members. In fact, the seedbank would be a rather meagre affair without the generous donations by regular members - donations are greatly appreciated! Obtaining fresh seed of sought after varieties can sometimes prove a challenge. The NZCPS does however recognise that New Zealand has strict biosecurity laws in place to protect our natural enviroment and prevent unwanted pests and diseases from reaching our shores. The NZCPS will endeavour to legally source seeds, either through seedbank exchange programs with other carnivorous plant societies or from purchases from reputable commercial seed companies, and to make these available through the seedbank.

So, what's on the list?

You can download the current seedbank list in PDF format which can be read and printed using Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader, it can be downloaded for free below - just follow the link.

To download the current seedbank list, please ensure that you have the acrobat reader.

Right click on the link and choose "save target as" to download and view the file.

Packets of seed cost NZD$3.00 each. There is no limit to the number of packets you can order, but please respect that there is enough seed in each packet to give you enough to get at least two sowings. It is wise to save some seed for a second attempt if something unexpected and untoward happens to the first attempt. Seed of rare species and cultivars will not contain the same amount of seed as the more common varieties, but will still contain enough to get started.

Please include a stamped, self-addressed, standard envelope with your order. Your order will be sent to you in this envelope and will be padded with a thin layer of bubblewrap to protect the seeds. You may pay by a variety of means - cash, cheque are easiest, but money orders and payment in New Zealand stamps will also be accepted. Many members pay with cash and all payments must be in New Zealand dollars.

To place your order, please download and print the current seedbank list. Then, tick which species and cultivars you wish to purchase and ensure all details are supplied. Completed order forms including a stamped, self-addressed envelope can be sent along with payment to:

To encourage the conservation and education of carnivorous plants and to share an interest in these beautiful and highly fascinating plants, the NZCPS will provide seeds of selected varieties without charge to teachers within New Zealand for use in the classroom as teaching aids. The NZCPS has strong commitments to ensuring the preservation of carnivorous plants and their habitats - both here in New Zealand and around the world.
