Many people do not realise that New Zealand has its own representative carnivorous plant species. A Guide to the Pitcher Plants of Peninsular Malaysia - Charles Clarke

A fantastic introductory guide to the carnivorous pitcher plants of this region by legendary author Charles Clarke. This guide to the pitcher plants (Nepenthes) of Peninsular Malaysia discusses the 10 species and several natural hybrids that occur in the region. In comparison to the neighbouring islands of Borneo and Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia is not often considered to be a centre of diversity for pitcher plants, but as this book serves to illustrate, the species that occur there are as beautiful and spectacular as those from anywhere else.

This guide is not as scientifically weighted as the authors other books, but this in no way should put you off purchasing such a great book. There are many full colour glossy photos thoroughout and this book will make you want to jump on the next plane to the tropics! The book is divided into several parts with the first part introducing the reader to pitcher plants in general and species distribution with maps and drawings. The second part discusses each of the species and the more common of the  natural hybrids in greater detail.

A Guide to the Pitcher Plants of Sabah - Charles Clarke

Like the above title, this is another fantastic introductory guide to the carnivorous pitcher plants of the tropics by legendary author Charles Clarke. This time focussed on the pitcher plants (Nepenthes) of Sabah. Sabah is one of the richest areas in the world for Nepenthes species and to date there are some 20 species and several natural hybrids that occur in the region.

These numbers are bound to change and as recently as October 2006, Charles Clarke has described yet another addition to the genus Nepenthes, with the description of Nepenthes chaniana from Gunung Alab - the highest peak on the Crocker Range National Park.

Like nearly all other of the authors publications, there are many full colour glossy photos depicting the plants in their natural habitat - this offers immensible value and gives you a feel for their cultivation needs outside of their natural range. This guide book will serve you well when you step off the plane in Sabah and head for the hills.
